Staying on Track for Thanksgiving

As a nutrition coach, I am always asked by my clients, “How do I stay on track with my nutrition during the holidays?” There are several tips that I would recommend in order to stay healthy and on track during the holiday of Thanksgiving.

Below are 4 strategies for better health during the holidays:

1. Plan ahead

Before the big day, consider planning your meals and snacks for the week leading up to Thanksgiving. This can help ensure that you are eating nutritious foods and avoiding overeating during the holiday.

2. Don't skip meals

It can be tempting to skip meals before a big holiday feast, but this can actually lead to overeating later on. Instead, make sure to eat regular meals and snacks throughout the day to keep your hunger levels in check.

3. Stay active

Incorporating physical activity into your day can help you burn off some of the extra calories you may consume during Thanksgiving dinner. Consider taking a walk after your meal or planning a fun outdoor activity with friends and family.

4. Practice mindful eating

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the holiday and mindlessly eat whatever is in front of you. Instead, try to be present and mindful during your meal. Pay attention to the flavors and textures of the food, and take your time while eating to help you feel more satisfied and prevent overeating.

Thanksgiving is a time to be together.  Enjoy the ceremony of coming to the table and sharing a special meal with those dear to you.  Join in conversations, compliment the chef or chefs, ask questions and really dial in on the reason you’ve come together in the first place, to connect with others.  Allow the food and drink to be a bonus of the communion.
